Diabetes Mellitus Treatment – Treatments For a Healthy Life

Diabetes mellitus treatment is a topic important to many people. Diabetes mellitus is a disease that results in elevated blood sugar levels and it affects more and more people every year.

There are two main types of diabetes and they share similar symptoms including increased thirst, increased urination, increased hunger, fatigue, blurred vision, and the possibility of abnormal sensations in the hands and feet or cuts and bruises that heal slowly.

Though symptoms are similar, diabetes treatments and causes vary quite a bit. This article shares type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus treatment options.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus treatment

Type 1 diabetes mellitus is also known as insulin-dependent diabetes because a person with this condition will need to rely on insulin supplementation for the rest of their life.

Insulin is administered via daily injections that are delivered by the patient or through an insulin pump that is worn by the diabetic throughout the day.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus treatment

In type 2 diabetes, a person can produce insulin however; their body has become resistant to its effects. This prevents sugar from moving out of the blood and into the body cells where it would normally be used as energy.

A type 2 diabetic may be able to manage his or her blood sugar with proper diet, exercise, and weight control.

Regardless of which type of diabetes is present, you can manage this disorder and go on to lead a productive and long life. There are important factors that will influence how well you manage diabetes mellitus and they include:

  1. Learning about your condition. "Diabetes education is an important first step. All people with diabetes need to learn about their condition in order to make healthy lifestyle choices and manage their diabetes"(1).
  2. Eating right. All diabetics should learn and follow diabetic diet guidelines to help manage their blood sugar level.
  3. Weight management. Obesity can complicate diabetes. Diabetic weight loss diets can help you control your blood sugar and lose weight.
  4. Exercise. Regular physical activity helps control blood sugar levels and can help you lose weight if necessary.
  5. Monitoring blood sugar. By closely monitoring your blood sugar you can avoid serious health complications.

Diabetes mellitus treatment requires effort but by paying attention to your health and the factors that impact your blood sugar level, you can lead a happy and healthy life with diabetes mellitus.
