Type 1 Diabetes Symptoms – Recognize The Warning Signs
Type 1 diabetes symptoms are very similar to the symptoms seen in type 2
diabetes however the symptoms tend to come on quickly and are more
commonly seen at a younger age. It is very important to consult your
doctor if any of the following symptoms are noticed.
Type 1 diabetes symptoms and signs
Type 1 diabetes is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce
sufficient amounts of insulin, a hormone needed to move sugar out of the
bloodstream and into the cells of the body. This robs the body cells of
energy and because the excess sugar remains in the bloodstream damage
to organs and tissues can result.
Common type 1 diabetes symptoms:
- Excessive thirst that is difficult to quench. Type
1 diabetics have difficulty clearing extra blood sugar out of their
bloodstream and because of the extra sugar fluids are pulled out of the
body to dilute the sugar. This leaves the person feeling thirsty.
- Excessive urination. Because the blood sugar
levels are too high, excess sugar spills out of the blood and into the
urine pulling water with it and leaving the person running to the
bathroom more frequently.
- Excessive hunger. Body cells use sugar for fuel
but in type 1 diabetes the sugar cannot move from the blood to the cells
leaving the cells starving for energy and giving you a sensation of
- Unexplained weight loss. Even though a person with
diabetes is feeling hungry and eating, their weight can drop because
the muscles and fat stores are not getting fueled and end up shrinking.
- Chronic fatigue. One of the more common of the type 1 diabetes symptoms, tiredness results due to the body cells being deprived of sugar.
- Blurry vision. If blood sugar levels stay
elevated, fluids get pulled from the body tissues including eye tissue,
which can lead to blurred vision.
What to do if you notice type 1 diabetes symptoms
An early diagnosis is very important for the proper management of
this disease. "Over time, diabetes can lead to blindness, kidney
failure, and nerve damage."
Diabetes can also accelerate heart
and blood vessel disease and the earlier treatment is started the less
damage will be done to the body. Consult you doctor today if you notice
the symptoms. Your doctor will perform blood tests to confirm the
presence or absence of the disease.
